Join us for 13.1 miles of smiles!

Richmond is on more and more “hot” lists as one of the best places to live, visit, and run in the country, and each of our scenic courses showcases some of our city’s favorite attributes. With street art and river views, historic architecture and beautiful parks, our race routes treat runners to a unique and unforgettable tour of RVA that ends with a grand finale finish line and post-race party on the riverfront!

During your race, you’ll also encounter live bands, DJs, spirit groups, and Party Zones that will offer plenty of encouragement and motivation. Need an extra burst of energy? We have you covered with junk food stops and wet wash cloths!* Once you cross the finish line, you’ll be greeted by a well-earned celebration on Brown’s Island complete with pizza and a Sierra Nevada Beer on the house! Take some time to revel in your accomplishment, but don’t let your Richmond experience end there. No matter if you’re a local or from out of town, there’s a whole city to explore!

Make sure you’re a part of the fun by signing up for the Markel Richmond Half Marathon. The half marathon features a tour of some of Richmond’s most beautiful and historic neighborhoods and is perfect for runners and walkers of all abilities who want to be a part of a great running event. The same first-class service that makes us “America’s Friendliest Marathon” elevates the Markel Richmond Half Marathon to a premier experience for all participants.

4-Hour Course Time Limit

All participants must be able to finish the half marathon in 4 hours. In order to do so, you will need to maintain a 18:19 per mile pace or you will be asked to move to the sidewalk to enable the reopening of the streets to vehicular traffic. At that time, there will no longer be traffic protection, medical aid or water stops offered.

Course Support

Diamond Springs water and POWERade are offered at Miles 2, 4, 6, and 8-12 on the Half Marathon course, as well as at the finish. Water is also available at the start. Port-o-johns are located at the start, all water stops, and at the finish. Honey Stinger energy gel is offered at Mile 8 and wet washcloths are available at Mile 10. A Spectator Party Zone is located at Mile 7.

Pickle Juice Stop on the half marathon course

While we all relish the challenge of the half marathon, no runner should have to dill with leg cramps during a race. That’s why we have a Pickle Juice Stop at Mile 10 on the half marathon course. We’re not gherkin your chain when we say that research suggests pickle juice helps relieve muscle cramps. Don't worry, we’ll have volunteers on hand to make sure you don’t mistakenly grab a cup of pickle juice instead of water. And if you find that cue cumbersome, there will also be signage to alert you.

Post-race Shuttle

Free shuttle service will be available to take participants and spectators from the Post-Race Party back to parking areas located near the Start. The shuttle will run on a loop from 8 a.m. until the conclusion of the event. You can pick up the shuttle in the cobblestone circle on 7th Street just across the pedestrian bridge from Brown’s Island.

Shower facilities offered for out-of-town runners

The Downtown YMCA is offering shower facilities to participants after the race. The Downtown YMCA is located at 2 W. Franklin Street (between Foushee and Adams Streets), a block off the course about a half mile from the finish line. Please bring your race number with you on race day and show it to the front desk. Towels are not provided, so be sure to bring your own.
