Hollywood
Cemetery - Situated on a bluff overlooking
the James, this Richmond landmark attracts visitors
simply because of its historic value and scenic charm.
It also offers one of the best vantage points of the
James River. This cemetery is home to the graves of
two U.S. Presidents (James Monroe and John Tyler)
and the President of the Confederacy (Jefferson Davis),
as well as Generals J.E.B. Stuart and George Pickett
and author Ellen Glasgow. Located at 412 S. Cherry

Museum
of the Confederacy – A valuable
resource for the study of the role of the Confederacy
in the War and in our society today. It houses a rich
collection of civilian and military Civil War artifacts
relating to the Confederate States of America. Located
at 1201 E. Clay St, (804) 649-1861.
The
Byrd Theatre in Carytown – This
historic theatre opened in 1928 and has not undergone
any major rennovations since. Movies are preceeded
by an organist’s performance on Saturday nights.

The
Science Museum of Virginia – Offers
lessons in astronomy, an IMAX theatre, and educational
exhibits on topics such as DNA, air pressure, electricity
and machines. Located at 2500 West Broad Street, (804)
864-1400.
The
Edgar Allen Poe Museum - The Poe Museum
provides a retreat into early 19th century Richmond
where Edgar Allan Poe lived and worked. The museum
features Poe's life and career by documenting his
accomplishments with pictures, relics, and verse,
and focusing on his many years in Richmond. Located
at 1914-16 E. Main Street, (804) 648-5523.
Children’s
Museum of Richmond – For the kids
in your life, this boasts engaging learning environments
including water play, an aquarium, a year-round outdoor
space, an inventor’s lab, an art studio, and
various other exhibits. Located at 2626 West Broad
Street, (804) 474-7000.

Slip and The Fan District for excellent cuisine and

If you’re willing
to take a short drive, Washington D.C. is two hours
north, the striking Shenandoah National Park is 90
miles away and Colonial Williamsburg is also close
by. The stunning James River runs along downtown Richmond
and the region boasts more than 900 restaurants. All
in all, Richmond and the surrounding areas have eternal
appeal that promise to be a pleasant surprise to athletes
and spectators alike.
